Local and Remote Atmospheric Circulation Drivers of Arctic Change: A Review

چکیده

Arctic Amplification is a fundamental feature of past, present, and modelled future climate. However, the causes this “amplification” within Earth’s climate system are not fully understood. To date, warming in has been most pronounced autumn winter seasons, with trend predicted to continue based on model projections Nevertheless, mechanisms by which will take place numerous, interconnected. complex. Will be primarily driven local, within-Arctic processes, or external forces play greater role contributing changing region? Motivated uncertainty climate, review seeks evaluate several key atmospheric circulation processes important ongoing discussion amplification, focusing troposphere. Both local remote drivers amplification considered, specific focus given high-latitude blocking, poleward moisture transport, tropical-high latitude subseasonal teleconnections. Impacts variability transport sea ice, ice sheet surface mass balance, snow cover, other cryospheric variables reviewed discussed. The evolution discussed terms projected trends blocking their coupling cryosphere. As strongly influenced lower-latitude state tropical-to-Arctic teleconnections also considered.

Atmospheric circulation patterns which promote winter Arctic sea ice decline

The impact of winter atmospheric blocking over the Ural Mountains region (UB) coincident with different phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the sea ice variability over the Barents and Kara Seas (BKS) in winter is investigated. It is found that the UB in conjunction with the positive phase of the NAO (NAOþ) leads to the strongest sea ice decline. During this phase composites and t...

A review of the temporal and spatial variability of Arctic and Antarctic atmospheric circulation based upon ERA-40

A survey of the spatial and temporal behavior of the atmospheric general circulation as it relates to both polar regions is presented. The review is based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 40-year reanalysis (ERA-40), updated using ECMWF operational analyses. The analysis spans 1960–2005 in the Northern Hemisphere, but is restricted to 1979–2005 in the Southern H...

Atmospheric Circulation of Hot Jupiters: A Review of Current Understanding

Hot Jupiters are new laboratories for the physics of giant planet atmospheres. Subject to unusual forcing conditions, the circulation regime on these planets may be unlike anything known in the Solar System. Characterizing the atmospheric circulation of hot Jupiters is necessary for reliable interpretation of the multifaceted data currently being collected on these planets. We discuss several f...

Local and remote controls on observed Arctic warming

[1] The Arctic is warming two to four times faster than the global average. Debate continues on the relative roles of local factors, such as sea ice reductions, versus remote factors in driving, or amplifying, Arctic warming. This study examines the vertical profile and seasonality of observed tropospheric warming, and addresses its causes using atmospheric general circulation model simulations...
